Advantages: two central locations, very cheap prices, a great variety of quality Ukrainian food (even tourist-favourite chicken Kyiv) and hot/cold drinks including beer. Disadvantages: very crowded and noisy at lunchtime, in the evening and on weekends. We recommend it if you're in a hurry or want to choose your favorite Ukrainian dishes cafeteria-style.

An enormous selection of European and Ukrainian dishes, from Irish-fried potatoes to 'bitok' - fried meat Kyiv-style. There are also soups, salads, desserts and an assortment of drinks. New dishes are introduced frequently, and special food is served in honor of Ukrainian holidays.

Despite popular Ukrainian claims that the golden arches are forming cracks, most locations are usually busy. The menu here is considerably smaller than in Western countries: the sandwich list is basic and no breakfast. Due to heavy traffic, many bathrooms are far from clean. Probably Kyiv's closest thing to a deli, a good selection of sandwiches on different rolls is available at Mister Snack's many locations. Alternately, you can pick and choose ingredients to make your own and also have it toasted. Drinks range from coffee and tea to soda and beer.

Pechena Kartoply (Baked Potato)

A simple idea, this one: order a piping-hot baked potato and then your favorite toppings from cheese or mushrooms to chicken or different salads. This chain has street kiosks as well, but beware of copycats. Only the logo with the mustachioed chef holding a kartoplya is the real deal.

The name belies a wide range of dishes besides just the potato. Traditional Mexican fast food like taco, burritos and chili are on offer, as well as salads, bliny (Ukrainian crepes) and desserts. After ordering, take your number to your table and wait for your meal to arrive.

By far Kyiv's closest thing to Kentucky Fried Chicken, although the cute cartoon figure with fork and knife doesn't evoke the most pleasant thoughts. This fast-food joint serving chicken, French fries and even decent corn-on-the-cob has three convenient locations: in Globus and Metrograd shopping malls, and near metro Respublikanskiy Stadion.

Ukraine's answer to McDonald's delivers traditional dishes like borsch, handmade varenyky (dumplings with various fillings like potatoes, mushrooms and meat), chicken Kyiv and various salads to your tray in much less than time it will take you to pronounce 'Schvidko'. There's also a kids' menu, as well as beer for adults.
